Merlin

Merlin

Merlin will be played by Gary Alsup

Merlin is a legendary figure best known as the wizard in the Arthurian legend. This depiction of the character is based on an amalgamation of previous historical and legendary figures.

Interestingly, the character that Merlin is most based on was a Welsh bard and prophet named Myrddin. Geoffrey of Monmouth gave his character the name Merlinus rather than Merdinus (the normal Latinization of Myrddin) because the latter might have suggested to his Anglo-Norman audience the vulgar word “merde.”

Merlin’s traditional biography casts him as a cambion; born of a mortal woman, sired by an incubus, the non-human wellspring from whom he inherits his supernatural powers and abilities.

Merlin matures to an ascendant sagehood and engineers the birth of Arthur through magic and intrigue. Merlin assists Uther Pendragon and is responsible for transporting the stones of Stonehenge from Ireland. Later authors have Merlin serve as the king’s adviser until he is bewitched and imprisoned by Vivien his apprentice who in some versions is also the Lady of the Lake.
